Kevin Durant planning to join Team USA workouts
Durant was named to the 34-player minicamp last week, but wasn’t expected to compete as he recovers from a fracture in his right foot.
Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Anthony, meanwhile, is likewise planning to jump into the light, noncontact practices scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday on the campus of UNLV.
‘If we had competition we had to prepare for it would be a different story, ‘ said USA Basketball Chairman and National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo. Guys like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, and Chandler Parsons are in attendance but will not be participating in any drills as they are still recovering from injuries while LeBron James has been excused from all activities after being in Las Vegas for only one day.
During a Team USA shootaround on Tuesday, Kevin Durant was asked about those pesky rumors that he’s leaving Oklahoma City for Washington D.C. once his contract is up in 2016. During the coverage, he was mic’d up, which provided plenty of entertaining interactions with both Durant and Westbrook.
His return to basketball action, at least, is a great sign for his recovery. In March, he decided to undergo surgery to completely relieve the pain. Anthony was not expected to be recovering this fast but he says that it’s coming along great. “But I’m glad I went through that journey and it’s made me a stronger man”.
Anthony said he has been working out with all the rookies, including Porzingis, the 7-3 power forward taken fourth overall in June’s draft.
Monty Williams, the former Pelicans head coach who is headlining Billy Donovan’s first OKC staff, is also an assistant for the USA team.
