Doug Melvin is leaving as general manager of Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers are in the market for a new general manager.
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Melvin will remain with the organization in an advisory role and owner Mark Attanasio is committed to keeping Craig Counsell as manager regardless of who’s chosen as the new GM.
The move was announced on Twitter earlier today. “My gut feeling tells me it’s time to give Mark the opportunity to look over the next generation of general managers”.
Originally hired by the Brewers on September 26, 2002, Melvin immediately launched a rebuild that brought the team’s payroll down $40 million in 2003 and $27 million in 2004.
Attanasio said a tentative list of candidates already has been compiled and he will begin at these meetings asking owners for permission to interview them.
Doug Melvin is leaving his job after 13 years in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee is rebuilding, having traded Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez at the July 31 trade deadline. He was also promoted to president of baseball operations and general manager.
The following year, Melvin signed a contract extension keeping him with the team through this season.
Now 63, Melvin apparently feels it’s time to move on. Not surprisingly, there’s a lot of highly qualified peopled who’d like to be the general manager of a major league baseball team.
