Sprint tries to counter Mobile Without Borders with its Open World offer
Sprint is the latest US carrier to make it easier (and cheaper) for customers to communicate with friends and family around the world.
The carrier has already announced previously that it will provide unlimited 2G data to users roaming in Latin America and it doesn’t look like this promotion builds on top of that. (According to Sprint, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will be added to Open World soon.) Additionally, those traveling in Australia, Canary Islands, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Palestinian Territories, Russia, San Marino, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Vatican City and Wales can take advantage of free texting and a $0.20-per-minute calling rate.
Data-wise, Open World gets you 1GB of 3G data for free in Mexico, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and “select other Latin America countries”, which means Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay.
Sprint Corp (NYSE:S) announced a new service that ensures that customers are not charged extra for worldwide calling and texting, namely to Canada, Mexico and certain Latin American countries. For those who like to travel, it boasts free unlimited calls and texts when traveling in Canada, Mexico and more than a dozen Latin American countries without the annoyance of roaming charges. If you end up in Canada or Mexico, you’ll get 1GB of free 3G data before Sprint begins to charge $30 per GB – billed in “MB” increments.
Sprint is not alone in targeting cross-border users.
T-Mobile and its subsidiary MetroPCS last month unveiled an add-on plan that offers unlimited calls and texts to people in Mexico.
