Costa Rica coach Wanchope involved in fight
Costa Rica and Panama’s U-23 groups met in Panama Metropolis Tuesday night time as a part of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
While the teams played to a scoreless draw, Thomas Floyd of Goal.com noted that Costa Rica coach Paulo Wanchope got into a fight with an unknown man on the sidelines.
Former Derby County, West Ham and Manchester City striker Wanchope is seen rowing with pitchside staff before being pushed into a child and brawling with a member of security.
According to Panamanian media, a stadium security guard told Wanchope that he could not enter the field towards the end of Costa Rica’s 0-0 tie with Panama, prompting Wanchope to become visibly upset. At this point, he turns back to punch a security official who then retaliates with an attempted flying kick and begins grappling with the former Premier League star.
Wanchope is not the only Americas manager who is having trouble controlling his temper: Mexico’s Miguel Herrera was sacked for allegedly attacking a journalist. I believe that there authorities (from) UNCAF (the Central American federation) that have to calm things.
He was officially named the coach on a permanent basis in February and played for Costa Rica in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
