Bour’s walk-off lifts Marlins to 5-4 win over Red Sox
The Rockies (47-64) are losers of their last 13 games. But the Marlins didn’t make the majority early on, unable to get on the board until the sixth against Red Sox knuckleball pitcher Steven Wright.
The Red Sox starter came into the series opener against Miami having allowed just three runs over 15 innings in his last two starts. He grounded out to Wright and the bases were left juiced.
Asked about his most recent display of catches, the always-confident Bradley smiled and said, “None of them was hard”. JBJ soared into third with his second triple in as many at-bats. He recorded all three outs in left, including this gem on Hechavarria. I.Suzuki walked on four pitches.
Lagares finished 3-for-4. Cuddyer was 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base while second baseman Wilmer Flores had two hits.
The Miami Marlins stranded 16 runners Tuesday night.
– Elsewhere in his conversation with MassLive, Betts discussed his strong relationship with former Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino, who was traded three days after Betts went down with his concussion. Swihart lined out to center fielder Gillespie. This ended Nicolino’s evening. He didn’t give up a run when he was in the ballgame, but did not escape unscathed.
Left-handed reliever Tommy Layne has been recalled to join the bullpen.
Boston added two more runs in the sixth, scoring on a bounced wild pitch by Nicolino, allowing shortstop Xander Bogaerts to score from third, and an RBI triple by right fielder Rusney Castillo. Red Sox 4, Marlins 3. Both runs were charged to Wright.
The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but only managed one run on Ichiro Suzuki’s long sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. Ogando struck out Hechavarria to end the inning and threat. Who Closes? Who Isn’t bad??
Sox manager John Farrell never mentioned Kelly’s name as a possible replacement for Uehara, instead saying that Tazawa, Jean Machi and Ryan Cook could be used in save situations.
Bench coach Torey Lovullo, who assumed managerial duties, told reporters after the game that it would be “a day-by-day thing” for Farrell while he recovers. It was Bour’s second walk-off hit of the season.
So why would this one be any different? There’s no clear heir to the ninth-inning throne, only a collection of relievers that form one of the worst bullpens in the majors. Again in the third inning, the Marlins had the sacks full courtesy a Derek Dietrich single, a Justin Bour single, and a Gillespie walk.
Tazawa got the final out to send the game to extra innings. Tazawa retired pinch hitter Tomas Telis to keep the game tied, but the damage was done and the ballgame not won. In his last 10 starts dating back to June 16, Harvey is 5-3 with a 1.45 ERA.
Gordon lined a triple to left-center field off Breslow as center fielder Mookie Betts’ dive was unsuccessful.
Boston opened the scoring with a run in the third.
Craig Breslow (0-2) took the loss for Boston after allowing a walk-off single to Justin Bour in the 10th inning with one out.
1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on.
-Betts, Bogaerts and JBJ had a combined 7 hits. “I felt like it was moving pretty good, but I just struggled getting it over the plate, so I was forced to throw more fastballs than I’d like”.
Ramirez missed his third consecutive game because of an ailing toe. Red Sox 4, Marlins 4.
