Cleveland Indians vs. New York Yankees
Francisco Lindor singled on a soft ground ball that landed between the mound and first base.
New York (61-50) is now on a four-game losing streak, and combined with the Toronto Blue Jays’ nine-game winning streak, the Yankees are just a half game up on their Canadian rivals.
Carrasco finished his night with 2 runs on 4 hits and 0 walks in 8 innings of work, with 8 strikeouts. Their 2,665 games between consecutive shutouts was a major league record.
And Chase Headley’s pinch-hit, two-run single in the 10th brought the Yankees to the edge of an important victory – only to have it all come apart.
Lindor led off the bottom of the 10th with an infield single off left-hander Andrew Miller. Michael Brantley doubled to left to put runners at second and third with no outs, Carlos Santana plated a run with a sac fly, then Yan Gomes singled to center to knot things up.
Right now, nothing is going the New York Yankees’ way.
The Mariners liked the Indians first-base platoon of Ben Broussard and Eduardo Perez in 2006 enough to sacrifice Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo to get them both at different times of that season. He had been 24-for-24 in save opportunities coming into the game. Troy Tulowitzki makes his initial appearance at Yankee Stadium with Toronto, which starts R.A. Dickey (6-10) against Nathan Eovaldi (11-2).
Bryan Shaw had a tough time in the top of the 10th, and the Tribe fell behind 4-2. After that incident, Chris Young came in as a pinch runner. But he walked Brian McCann and gave up singles to Beltran and Gregorious to load the bases. Beltran went 2-for-4, Drew had his homer, and Headley his two-run single. He gave up a leadoff home run in the 6th though, and then another in the 8th.
Sitting in the first base dugout Tuesday night watching Carlos Carrasco toy with them, the Yankees couldn’t avoid the scoreboard that delivered distressing news.
Joe Girardi boiled the Yankees’ lost weekend at the plate against Toronto down to a “few bad days”, ones he didn’t see enduring much longer. Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez said.
Tony Dejak/AP Carlos Beltran hits a game-tying home run in the eighth but the Bombers would drop the game in extras. The right-hander has allowed only three runs and seven hits in his past 26 innings.
In his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA and an opponents’ batting average of.
It’s no fun to lose in extra innings, but at least the offense had somewhat of a pulse in this game, even if the 1-5 batters failed to get anything going. Brantley was hit by a pitch, Lindor to second. The 25-year-old had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso prior to the game, and also collected a hit in his first major-league at-bat and later scored a run.
Brantley’s walkoff single means that Salazar will make his scheduled start on Wednesday night against for Indian C.C. Sabathia for New York. Indians manager Terry Francona said Kipnis could be activated sometime next week, when the Indians are in Boston for a three-game series starting August 17. He’s scheduled to throw 35 pitches Thursday, and as long as he’s pain free, he will likely go on a minor league rehab assignment.
