Bicyclist killed on I-15, traffic backed up near Rancho Bernardo
A motorcyclist was hospitalized, and traffic brought to a crawl Monday morning after a crash on the Sunol Grade, the California Highway Patrol said. (The children on the bus are part of the Giborim group, she said.). The camp remained open Monday afternoon. Traffic was backed up for miles after the accident. Other children were shuttled back to the Berkeley camp on a replacement bus that came to the scene.
The Berkeley Fire Department was taking four of the youth to Children’s Hospital in Oakland at 10:42 a.m.
Some of the children and all of the adults were taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center for treatment, CHP officials said.
“Those kids are going to get picked up here and have a quiet day camp”, he said.
Two lanes of the highway were closed for more than an hour while the CHP investigated the crash.
A van and Mercedes also were reported to be involved in the wreck, which forced the CHP to shut down two lanes, one of them a carpool lane, in the westbound direction of I-80.
CHP officers will inspect the bus to make sure there are no mechanical problems that contributed to the collision.
The CHP issued a severe traffic alert at 5:55 a.m. but lifted it about 15 minutes later.
