Sprint unveils free calls, texts to Canada and Mexico
Worldwide texts and calls will be free in Canada and Mexico, but you will be charged minimum 5 cents for each minute for calls to Latin America and other Sprint supported countries.
While T-Mobile has broken down its borders, Sprint is also going down the same path with the launch of its own Sprint Open World plans.
Sprint’s Open World is a riposte to T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS)’s Mobile without Borders. The plan additionally comes with free unlimited texting and calling and also 1GB of 3G data when travelling to Latin America, Mexico and Canada. Historically, users have spent considerable sums of money to use cellular service in other countries, including Mexico and Canada. Additional data costs $30/GB, billed in MB increments.
Sprint is opening the world to its customers to make it cheaper to make calls and access data.
Open World offers free unlimited text messaging and talk time to customers when they travel to Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Dominican Republic. Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay will be added to the list soon.
Finally, Sprint Open World offers free texting, $0.20 per minute calls, and $30 per GB data in Australia, Canary Islands (Spain), Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Palestinian Territories, Russia, San Marino (Italy), Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Vatican City, and Wales.
Sprint is the latest operator with a pricing plan that targets US visitors to neighbouring countries.
In addition, the Sprint add-on offers “free” calls and texts to Canada and Mexico from the US.
