Red Sox Hire Former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto In Interim Offseason Role
Dipoto worked as a scout for the Red Sox, along with Cherrington, in 2003 and 2004.
Peter Gammons was the first to report the news.
How Scioscia and the coaches used scouting and statistical information provided by the front office was reportedly at the crux of the discord between the manager and GM and ultimately led to Dipoto’s departure. He had been the Angels’ general manager since October of 2011.
The Red Sox have been as disappointing as any club in the Major League Baseball after their offseason overhaul, which netted them Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez, Rusney Castillo, Rick Porcello, Wade Miley, Justin Masterson and others.
Dipoto presided over the two biggest free-agent signings in franchise history, first baseman Albert Pujols to a 10-year, $240-million deal before the 2012 season and left fielder Josh Hamilton to a five-year, $125-million deal before 2013. Needless to say, it was a surprising move.
It’s clear changes are coming in Boston.
Larry Lucchino recently announced he was stepping down as team president and CEO at the end of the season.
There seems to be no indication as to how long Dipoto’s interim role with the Red Sox will last or if it is a prelude to him taking a permanent position with the team.
It is unclear if the hiring will be a short-term stop for Dipoto, who most likely will explore front office positions in the offseason.
Stay tuned for updates on this development.
