Red Sox lose closer, trade chip Koji Uehera to fractured wrist

Against the Tigers in Detroit on Friday night, Uehara was hit on the wrist by a line drive.

The 40-year old closer lead the Red Sox in ERA (Earned Run Average) with a 2.23, WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched) with a 0.92, and saves with 25 on the year.

Uehara, 40, is within the first yr of a two-year, $18 million contract. From all accounts, they are seriously considering it. One thing I keep hearing from the Farrell defenders is that it isn’t his fault. The time would be flawless for Hembree to finally get his shot.

The Red Sox will miss the arm of Uehara, especially since they have been struggling this year.

Although initial X-rays were negative, Uehara returned to Boston ahead of the team for more tests. “I think that was just part of trying to throw strikes and get ahead of guys and let (the defense) work out there, especially with the big field here”. The former top prospect has been with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers since July 26, and it does not appear he will get the chance to pitch again for the Dodgers unless he is brought up during September when the rosters expand.
