Rioting at New Folsom Prison leaves one dead, five hospitalized
The fight involving about 100 maximum-security inmates began when one inmate attacked another, “and then everyone else joined in”, said Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Dana Simas.
The identity of the inmate who was killed is being withheld at this time until their family is notified.
No staff members were injured in the incident, the state said.
The five hospitalized inmates all suffered stab wounds, and numerous inmate-made weapons were recovered, she said.
Konrad said most of the injuries were stab wounds but would not discuss what sparked the riot.
Forty-four years ago, Pinell helped slit the throats of San Quentin prison guards during an escape attempt that led to the deaths of three guards, two inmate workers and escape ringleader George Jackson.
Pinell was committed to CDCR in 1965 from San Francisco County to serve a life-with-parole sentence for rape with force, according to CDCR’s website.
Later that year, Pinell was convicted of killing a correctional officer at a Soledad training facility.
Prisoners remained locked in their cells as officers investigated Wednesday’s disturbance.
At least one inmate was killed during a riot at a state prison in Folsom, Calif. Wednesday afternoon.
