Game of Thrones will get a “bittersweet” ending, says George RR Martin
George RR Martin has taken time out from writing his next Game of Thrones book to sit on the Iron Throne… well, sort of.
“I haven’t written the ending yet, so I don’t know, but no. That’s certainly not my intent”, the Bayonne, New Jersey-born writer said.
Martin described the victory in Tolkien’s books as “bittersweet” and this is what he plans for in “A Song of Ice and Fire” as well. Will Jon Snow be resurrected and become humanity’s savior? He’s not promising a blissfully happy ending for his epic yarn, but it won’t be a heartbreaking bloodbath either.
According to Christian Today, a recent blog post by renowned author George R.R Martin said that there are possibilities of his new book “Winds of Winter” to be released before hand.
It seems that Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings will once again be a heavy influence.
The celebrity author said that he was aiming for a “bittersweet” ending for his book series, the same way “Lord of the Rings” books end. In the books, there’s an event called “the Scouring of the Shire” where the Hobbits return to find their idyllic little home in shambles and the evil wizard Saruman in control of its people. The story’s over?’ But every time I read it I understand the brilliance of that segment more and more. I see plenty of potential for the same tone in A Song of Ice and Fire: Daenerys wins the Seven Kingdoms yet loses her dragons; Arya gets revenge yet loses her identity; Tyrion finds the young wife he lost yet suffers the same fate as Varys (a eunuch) (egads).
It’s almost impossible nowadays to mention Game of Thrones and not cast your mind towards the blood, gore, betrayal, or any other form of shock or controversy that has pervaded the show since its introduction in 2011. Just when you think all the battles are done, there might be one more heartbreak to come.
