Watson wins playoff to take Travelers title
He saw. He Bubba’d.
This was also the place where Watson got off the schneid in 2010. He started one off the lead but was never a factor, shooting a 69 to tie for seventh at 5 under. Watson won the Travelers Championship for the second time, doing so, like he did in 2010, in a playoff.
“I hung on, and that’s what you have to do sometimes to win”, Watson said. “As a hometown company, we couldn’t be more proud to help support the local economy and charitable organizations that are making a real difference in the community”.
Watson defeated Paul Casey on the second playoff hole after finishing the four rounds tied at 16 under par.
Third-round leader Brian Harman of the U.S, birdied the final two holes for a one-under 69. Graham DeLaet also closed with a 69 to end in fourth at 14-under-par 266.
This thing looked closed up after Watson broke up a string of 11 pars with an eagle at the par-5, 13th hole.
With a tree in his way on the second hole, a fan advised Bubba to punch a low 4-iron underneath the obstruction.
DeLaet was not able to take advantage of the conditions, as he recorded a double bogey on the first hole and played from behind all day. Two-time Masters champion Watson could not get up and down on the 72nd hole, which forced the playoff.
“It does remind me of 2010, where coming down the stretch I had to hit some good shots and I didn’t”.
This go around the two golfers swapped tee shots on their previous tries and Casey was on the right hillside in the bunker, while Watson cut his in the fairway.
“Well, that’s why you’re on that side of the ropes”, he retorted, before playing a spectacular recovery shot. He three wins in more than 20 years on the PGA Tour, the last in the 2006 St. Jude Classic. This win, according to him, gets him closer to his aim in the sport and in his career. Casey parred the last, then waited to see what Watson would do. Casey salvaged par from a greenside bunker to enter the clubhouse at 16-under, clutch sand saves would become a theme for Paul. He skied the green. “I just heard a lot of screaming around the green”.
“The round was great, it really was”. Romero said he grabbed his 7-iron and decided to go for the pin after his caddie translated a sign about the hole-in-one prize next to the tee box. In deep rough and seemingly stymied by a tree on the par-4 second hole, Watson was given some unsolicited advice by a fan in his gallery. “But the goal was to give myself a chance to win, and I did that”, Casey added in the ESON report. So I knew that if I just kept my head down…
