Vigil to be held in Greenfield for murdered social worker
The funeral for the Vermont social worker who was shot and killed outside her office will be held Tuesday morning.
“Lara was a lovely, handsome individual and she really, really cared about the kids, all the kids”, Joseph Faryniarz, a cousin of Sobel’s husband, said during the vigil. Bystanders held Herring until Barre City police arrived minutes later. Shumlin ordered the Vermont flag to be lowered to half staff at all government buildings in honour of Sobel. Sobel’s murder has highlighted the dangers involved in their work, including those posed by a current of deeply negative perception towards the agency in the state.

Authorities investigate the scene of multiple deaths at a home in Berlin, Vt., on Saturday, August 8, 2015. Doug Gibson, spokesman for the Vermont State Employees Association, says their members came together to organize the event. “I think every day these folks are heroes in our community”, Cohen says. Her brother told cops Herring left him a pair of angry messages on Friday.

BARRE In the wake of a shooting that left dead a case worker with the Department for Children and Families, officials are looking at safety protocols in state office buildings as state workers express concern over their safety outside the office.
The victims were identified as 43 year old Regina Herring, 48 year old Rhonda Herring and Julie Falzarano, 73.
Scott Williams, Washington County state’s attorney, wrestled the rifle away from Herring after the shooting, according to the police affidavit.
Court papers filed by police say Herring was “very calm and laughing” after the shooting and was “making small talk about the incident like it was no big deal”.
However, during an interview Friday night, Herring became agitated, saying that police had never helped her when her boyfriend beat her and complaining about the injustices she suffered at the hands of DCF.
“She does have a prior criminal record”.
“You’ll wish you got ahold of me earlier”, she said, according to the affidavit.
Attorney General William Sorrell said after Monday’s court appearance it could be some time before additional charges are filed against Herring.
The state intends to charge Herring with first-degree murder in that case.
“The family and extended family would ask that all concerned continue to respect their privacy at this time”, read Bombardier from the prepared statement.
Shumlin said he planned to reach out to Herrings family later Monday as well.
Records show that Herring has 11 misdemeanor convictions dating to 1994, including drunken driving, domestic assault and disorderly conduct. She was convicted of the misdemeanor and fined $375.
