Qualifier Tsurenko ousts Muguruza at Toronto
The 21-year-old Muguruza has risen to No. 9 after her run to the final at Wimbledon.
Playing for that very first time since the Wimbledon event of last month, Halep struggled down all three split things she confronted and gained 80-percent of her first-serve factors within the 81 moment minute-round match.
Halep’s win over Jankovic was much different than their previous five contests which were all close.
Tsurenko made a blistering start to the second set, winning two of Muguruza’s service games whilst holding her own to race into a 5-0 lead.
In the second set, the Romanian saved three break points to conjur a 6-4 win, to ultimately seal the tie and book her spot in the next round of the competition.
The Spaniard was the surprise package at the All England Club as she reached her maiden grand slam final, her run eventually ended as Serena Williams cruised to the title 6-4 6-4.
Puig takes the court later Wednesday and will be looking to match what Lesia Tsurenko achieved when the Ukrainian qualifier upset Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 6-1.
The most effective-rated Williams may perform with her next -round match Friday night. “I always played about three hours with her and always had tough matches”, Halep said.
Wozniacki had just one ace and double faulted three times as she lost 7-5, 7-5 to Swiss Belinda Bencic.
Second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania and fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia also advanced to the third round, while third-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and fourth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark dropped out.
