Section of New Jersey Turnpike closed after fiery crash
Police say that there were minor injuries to the drivers, but no fatalities, and that delays are expected.
The six-lane turnpike has a steel barrier in the middle, and one of the trucks driving about 20 metres in front of him scraped it, releasing sparks, Mr Byrne said.
Two of the three inner lanes of the Turnpike have re-opened, but all outer lanes remained closed, according to the Turnpike Authority.
The truck was ablaze on the northbound side of the turnpike south of Interchange 9-New Jersey Route 18in East Brunswick Township.
Reports of the fire first started coming in around 8 p.m.
Residents reported their homes shaking from the impact of the explosion, and subsequently the tires of the tankers also blew, causing further smaller percussions.
