Fatigue blamed in crash that injured Tracy Morgan
Among the board’s recommendations resulting from its investigation, it recommended that Walmart develop and implement a fatigue management program based on the North American Fatigue Management Program guidelines and also taht it incorporate a method of conducting on going analysis of critical event reporet data on hard braking and stability control events. In the 13th hour of that trip, Roper hit Morgan’s vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike, killing one passenger and injuring Morgan and three others.
The chauffeured limo van by which Morgan and different comedians and buddies have been driving was pushed into slow-moving visitors forward.
But the board added that the actor and his travelling companions contributed to the seriousness of their injuries as none of them were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
“To its credit, Walmart has taken steps to bolster its driver fatigue education and policies since this crash”, Chairman Hart said.
Investigators also said the limousine-van had been customized, and that a sheet of plywood that had been installed to separate the cab from passengers blocked occupants from escaping the vehicle after the crash.
Other negligence noted in the report involved the need for better marking at the highway work zones as well as no use of seat belts by the passengers in the van.
Factors pointing to Roper’s fatigue, says NTSB, include not slowing down to the reduced 45 miles per hour limit and failing to react to the slower traffic ahead of him.
In a public hearing, NTSB officials said the Wal-Mart truck driver had driven 800 miles overnight to the company’s distribution centre before embarking on his delivery, and had been awake for more than 28 hours at the time of the crash. Investigators estimated it was traveling at 65 miles per hour in an area that was temporarily limited to 45 mph. The “Saturday Night Live” stars haven t undertaken ever since the disaster.
An accident description is displayed on a large screen as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) meets at their headquarters in Washington, Tuesday, August 11, 2015, to determine the cause of an accident last year that severely injured comedian Tracy Morgan and killed another comedian after a truck smashed into their limousine during a traffic backup on the New Jersey Turnpike.
How are your reflexes after you’ve been awake for 28 straight hours?
Walmart, which earlier this year settled lawsuits by McNair’s family, Morgan and other injured passengers for undisclosed amounts, has said Roper did not break any rules.
Roper still faces criminal charges from the matter, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
