Periscope Has 10M Registered Users Watching 40 Years Of Video Per Day
The pair also shared some metrics on the success which show that, since its launch on 26 March, the service has seen over 40 years of video watched per day.
Beykpour also dove into how many of those users actually use Periscope.
Though 2 million daily users isn’t a massive number, it appears Periscope has managed to keep its momentum going-and even accelerated in May when it released an Android app-which is more than its competitor Meerkat can say. “We hold ourselves accountable to Time Watched as an organizational measure because it reflects the kernel of our product, and our core values”.
According to App Annie, Periscope was the eighth and ninth most popular social-networking app on Google Play and the App Store, respectively, yesterday (Aug. 11). Success for the audience (viewers who are watching and participating in a Periscope) means more high quality broadcasts in their feeds that they want to watch and participate in. Here’s why: if we were motivated to grow DAU, we’d be incentivized to invest in a host of conventional growth hacks, viral mechanics, and marketing to drive up downloads.
In a blog post on Medium expanding on its strategy, Periscope said time watched is a proxy for active user growth.
During his live stream, Beykpour said Periscope was working on a fast-forward feature for replays, as well as “thoughtful” search functionality. HBO also issued Twitter with takedown notices after the latest episodes of TV series; Game of Thrones also became available through Periscope. It does not suffer from the limitations of metric like daily active users or monthly active users, he claims. “This direction doesn’t necessarily lead to a better product, or lead to success for Periscopers”.
Twitter has spent a lot of time talking up Periscope, the livestreaming app it bought back in January.
