Joey Logano wins Xfinity race at Watkins Glen

He takes what he get on the race track these days, which are often bleak and embarrassing for the three-time NASCAR champion. Our team executed perfectly today.

In Saturday’s race, Logano held off Brad Keselowski for the win of the 82-lap competition. Busch quickly got by him for third, but he was a distant third behind Harvick and Logano. “I didn’t do a good job”.

“There are no guarantees unless you get that win”. While Allmendinger has had large negative numbers before at Sonoma, he has never failed to land at least 29 points in a Watkins Glen race.

Truex was back up in third behind Harvick and Kenseth at the final restart – and had made his last pit visit two laps later – but he had a front-left tyre go down, almost putting him into the wall at the final corner.

“I started to catch him a little bit, and I drove into (Turn) 1 too hard (on the final lap) and started to wheel hop”.

Just like the Sprint Cup race last week at Pocono, this race came down to fuel mileage. “This year, even through our struggles, we all believe in each other”.

Logano and Keselowski took turns leading, and when the race went green after a caution with 20 laps to go Logano was ahead.

“I thought he was running out of gas out of he carousel there”, Logano said. “That is something I have been looking forward to”. “I didn’t think about how far I could get and what I could accomplish”.

A week ago Logano lost in a race decided by fuel mileage and this week he got the win.

“We have a lot of concrete patches now throughout the course that we’ve installed throughout the last couple years, and that’s kinda become something that Watkins Glen has been known for”, Banker said.

“Yeah”, he said. “That would be the first, but hopefully not the last”. He also gave Roger Penske his first Cup victory at The Glen.

In the last few Sprint Cup seasons, all eyes at The Glen were glued to the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 9 Ford driven by road racing standout Marcos Ambrose. Allmendinger won the 2014 edition of the race to secure a spot in the Chase.

“This is a big one”, he said.

Andrews bought some Watkins Glen merchandise and a T-shirt for a friend. After finishing second in the Cheez-It 355, Busch sits 30th in the driver standings.

With Busch finally in the field and Kasey Kahne victim to a mid-race wreck on a restart, there’s now a fifty point gap between the first position in the Chase and the first position out. Busch, who is tied with Jimmie Johnson for the most win this year, was granted a dispensation by NASCAR that he could be part of the 16-car group fighting for the Sprint Cup title if he could finish the regular portion of the season in the Top 30 in the standings.

Logano captured his second checkered flag of the season with a last-lap pass when Kevin Harvick ran out of fuel. That was probably another reason we didn’t need to run out of gas and have an issue here today. “I’m doing really, really good, and I feel really, really good week in and week out getting out of the auto”. So many people can be so much more aggressive on their pit calls because they’re locked in. In the end Allmendinger fought his way back up to a 24th place finish.

Sunday was the second straight week where fuel strategy played a pivotal role in the outcome.
