Facebook Inc Preps “Live Streaming” Feature For Verified Profiles And Journalists
Facebook, which plans to expand the feature to include verified users, is doing a good job at maintaining a balance between promoting well known personalities while also allowing professionals to create a profile which will help them interact with target markets and potential partners.
According to TechCrunch, Facebook explained via an email it would soon start allowing verified profiles access to the Mentions app, which houses the Facebook Live broadcasting feature.
Expanding the availability of Facebook Mentions to the media would give journalists powerful tools to enhance their coverage. Users can watch in real-time and post comments on the broadcasters screen.
Still not keen on letting “normal” folk on their live-streaming platform, Facebook has revealed that they do plan to let other not-so-famous people to stream their mundane lives on their Periscope and Meerkate competing live-streaming service.
This feature is not to be confused with Facebook’s original content interview series Facebook Live, which seems to be on hiatus.
Facebook has confirmed that its Mentions app, which is so far exclusively available to celebrities, will soon be made available to verified profiles which may include not just a few more entertainers, athletes, and politicians, but also many journalists who could use the app to run live streams.
When Live launched, Facebook only offered access to a limited set of celebrities with Verified Pages, such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Serena Williams, Martha Stewart, and Michael Bublé.
The reason for Facebook not opening the system to everyone is that it’s probably figuring out a way to handle the load as well as likely using celebrities as an example of what users should do with such services.
Beykpour, on a live stream announcing Periscope’s subscriber achievement, said that the unit now has 23 full-time employees and that they are continually working to improve the product and its offerings. Periscope might have gotten a five-month head start and just hit 10 million registered users.
