Andy Murray breezes into the last eight in the Rogers Cup
Jamie is partnering John Peers – who he reached the Wimbledon final with last month – while Andy continues with Leander Paes, who he defeated Jeremy Chardy and Kevin Anderson with.
Their eighth encounter was suspended due to rain at 4-4 in the first set on Tuesday, before Murray got off to a flying start to open proceedings on Court Central.
“It was a very tough match, there were a lot of nerves near the end of the first set”, said Murray.
“It’s the first time me and Jamie have played each other professionally”.
“It’s awkward; it’s not the most comfortable situation”.
Murray will look to extend his 4-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head edge over Gilles Muller when the pair meet for a spot in the quarter-finals. “Hopefully we can play a good match and there will be no hard feelings”. I am hitting my back hand better and it forced Tommy to slice the ball.
Later in the day, Andy Murray faced Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller, and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took on Bernard Tomic.
Ahead of the game, world number three Andy spoke of his nerves entering the clash, which was the first time the two had ever met in their carrers.
Djokovic got off to a sluggish start in the opening centre court match of the day but after breaking to go up 3-2 the 28-year-old Serb was in complete control with Sock managing just a single break chance, which he was unable to convert.
Qualifier Ernests Gulbis pulled off a 6-2 5-7 6-3 triumph over Lukas Rosol and will next face Berdych’s conqueror Young.
“The turning point was the 3-2 game when I made a break”, added Djokovic.
Djokovic, who won the Rogers Cup in 2007, 2011 and 2012, has won 50 of his 53 matches this year.
After speaking with the trainer and his coach Magnus Norman, the 30-year-old third seed decided to give up the match.
Djokovic continues to dominate at the ATP Tour’s biggest events, unbeaten in a prestigious Masters 1000 tournament since he fell to Roger Federer in Shanghai previous year.
