Cops: NYC Drug Dealer Disguised His Coke Shipments With Minion Dolls
In news that will rival that Dolph Lundgren starring in Kindergarten Cop 2 report for the most freakish story of the day, the New York City authorities have busted a massive drug ring that was using Minions and Frozen toys, among others, to smuggle huge amounts of cocaine into Manhattan. The packages all held special gift bags; the actual drugs were hidden in boxes covered in “Happy Birthday” wrapping paper.
The only thing missing was a bow.
Albert Fortosa, 24, of Harlem was arrested on July 2nd while allegedly accepting a package of narcotics wrapped up as gifts. They were even wrapped, though in addition to the childrens toys, these deliveries also included wireless internet router boxes full of cocaine. Most of the bags, the NYPD said in a press release, contained stuffed Olaf dolls, while a Minion was stuffed into one of the illicit parcels.
The 71-count indictment charges some or all of the suspects with conspiracy, criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest, among other crimes. Addressed to people with fake names, or citizens who had nothing to do with the nefarious drug ring, the packages were dressed up to look like birthday presents.
Santana was known as an alleged club drug dealer at the start of the investigation, and court-authorized wiretaps allowed police to identify Reyes as a potential supplier, according to prosecutors.
Those men were arrested and include Daniel Reyes, 26, a suspected drug delivery service operator in Bushwick; Derrick Santana, 25, who allegedly sold drugs in nightclubs in New York City; Joseph Owens, 44, who worked closely with Fortosa; and Mallory Claudio, 28, whose alleged involvement was not revealed, investigators said. Fortosa’s bail was set at $250,000.
The investigation led to Fortosa, who was allegedly at the top of the cocaine supply chain and is also accused of selling heroin, MDMA and marijuana. Reyes, Santana, and Owens were remanded pending bail hearings.
