The shotgun blast of fury that first emanated from South Central Los Angeles in 1988 still packs a punch.

In regards to Straight Outta Compton, Jackson Jr. was asked if he had to grow his hair out in order to play the role of his father, who rocked a Jheri curl during most of his time spent in N.W.A. He then revealed that Universal Studios dished out $15,000 for Jheri curl wigs he could wear during filming for the biopic. In the time since, Ren’s career has been largely defined in the mainstream through features in collaborations, on platinum albums such as Dr. Dre’s 2001, Ice Cube’s War & Peace, Vol. 2, and Snoop Dogg’s Tha Last Meal. But there’s been a smattering of criticism against some of the biggest names in rap today for not using their status and rhymes to speak out against the seemingly routine deaths at the hands of cops. In 2015, everything is working in their favor.

The rap icon’s passing at 31 was an eye-opener for many people who weren’t educated about the disease at the time. They often silently populate the background, always a hovering threat.

Giving the film a bit of real Hollywood “street cred” is multi-award winning actor Paul Giamatti as group manager and svengali Jerry Heller. We were going places, [and the authorities would say] ‘get on the ground face down.’ Nowadays, 26 years later, it is like the same thing going on…

Nor do they make a habit of telling the stories of searing, provocative black voices that rise out of urban nightmares.
