Teen Wolf Season 5 Episode 1 Review: “Creatures of the Night”

In a not-so-great start to the season, the episode begins with what is surely supposed to be Teen Wolf’s version of high level horror and instead ends up being an upsettingly long amount of abuse toward Lydia. Suffice to say, there’s plenty of threads to tug on this season and see what the reality of it all is. There will also be a new gay couple on the show, Corey and Lucas. After that, Theo introduced himself and Stiles looked suspicious.
Carrie is a writer with a passion for art. A self-proclaimed geek from Wisconsin, she loves everything from steampunk to sci-fi to anything indie and is more than happy to bombard your timelines with whatever she finds. The only clue is that Stiles’ first name sounds like a word that would describe the character.
There is also a new player in the mix. “It really deals with the characters’ hearts and emotions and the trials that they’re going through”.
The preview definitely shows some in-empathetic, cold and sadistic looking villains, though the cast and crew have been very clear that the Dread Doctors are actually more human than anyone the pack has faced. “One of the things we wanted to do most in this season was test their friendships in a way we’ve never done before”. While the sheriff said that was impossible, the pursuit provided for some thrills. Tracy is this new character who isn’t just suddenly appearing, she’s also the sole focus as the opener of the hour.
“[This season] really revolves around Scott, his pack, and Theo, and trying to keep the pack together”, he said. The show added to that last night with the exchange between Lydia and the nurse that raised issues of consent, had a disturbing sexual undertone and continued to perpetuate negative stereotypes about mental health institutions. It happens again here, with Lydia inexplicably in a catatonic state, abused by one orderly (verbally and apparently through drug dosage) and nearly sexually assaulted by another (and the implication could be that she has already been sexually assaulted by him). And unless being kidnapped by the Doctors and turning into a werewolf is a common occurrence for Tracy, I’d say that qualifies as a shenanigan.
Other storylines will continue throughout this season. Though the lovingly dubbed Rave Wolf met his end at the hands of his creators, Scott isn’t out of the dark yet. However, Peter’s cellmate, Dr. Valack (Steven Brand) is still around, and he’s going to be making his trepanating presence felt this season, if this episode is to be believed.
A two part premiere is about to grace the small screens this coming June 29 and June 30 for the MTV series “Teen Wolf“. That episode drew a 0.8 rating with 1.543 million viewers. It also garnered attention in its third season, for producing a higher than normal amount of episodes with, 24 airing that season.
