Manawatu transgender community celebrate Caitlyn Jenner
Timidly worked up the nerve to talk to her.
“Caitlyn’s attorneys are confident the lawsuit filed by the step-children of Kimberly Howe, the woman who was killed, will be dismissed because there was no relationship of financial dependence, but the second lawsuit filed by Jessica Steindorff, who was driving a Prius that got rear-ended, could be very costly because she did suffer injuries”. Harlow ran a place by that name in the 1970s, when disco ruled the nightclubs and Bruce Jenner ruled the Olympics. And then I read that she was a he who transitioned.
“She says that she has kept her mouth shut for far too long and she refuses to be silenced anymore”.
As I usually do, I scrolled through Facebook one recent morning to see what’s new with my friends and family around the world. “He was married to me and he wasn’t who he wanted to be so he was miserable…” “Where did you grow up?”
I’m a strong believer in the principle that freedom of speech is for the thought that we hate, but that doesn’t mean editorial judgment should be tossed aside at a newspaper.
Things are changing. While Tantay said sometimes crippling bullying and harassment can be common, particularly in schools, some Lower Hudson Valley high schools have built gender-neutral restrooms to make transgender students feel safer and more comfortable. “I was raised Catholic”. I was scrolling through Twitter and saw the new face of MAC cosmetics.
“Caitlyn’s agent was relentless in getting her the huge payday”, one such spy reveals.
“I have been picking myself apart my whole life”, she said.
Unless you shared that educational experience, you have to strain to imagine the seismic shift beneath the firm ground of sexual innocence/ignorance many baby-boom-era and older Philadelphians have endured.
After watching the two-part series of KUWTK, which focused on Bruce Jenner’s transition, it made me sad.
She’s been problematic, and she’s been hurtful: Her appropriation of black culture throughout 2013, for example, cannot be written off. If you had to elect someone who would reliably and respectably represent non-binary gender identities to the American public, Miley Cyrus would probably not get past the primary. “There needs to be more of a shift to ensure that those people who don’t fit within the binary men and women system, their needs are looked after within the education system”.
Is it in the environment or the culture?
But beyond the specific moniker they settle on, and regardless of how much they’ve publicly expressed their support of Caitlyn during her transition, the offspring of the world’s most famous transgender female are still embarking on a special transition of their own – one that no amount of reality show fame and privilege could have prepared them for.
Both Jenner and Cyrus have, in their ways, boosted that visibility: After Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, a conversation about trans beauty standards turned into #MyVanityFairCover, in which Jenn Dolari and Crystal Frasier created a simple cover template and allowed trans folks to upload their own portraits to illustrate the diversity of trans identity. She’s a card-carrying Republican, and she wants to sit down with House Speaker John Boehner to try to change his mind on issues of equality.
And so she is. She controlled the money, all that kind of stuff.
