Cuomo Bans Powdered Alcohol, The “Capri Suns For Adults”
Powdered alcohol – or Palcohol, as the Arizona-based Lipsmark calls it – won’t be legal in New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill banning it Friday.
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved food labels for Palcohol in March.
With the signing of this measure, (S.1757A / A.8043), New York is joining more than 20 other states that have banned the substance.
Critics believe the product would facilitate underage drinking because it is packaged in small bags that are easy to hide. They say if the drinks are mixed incorrectly or if the powder is ingested, it can lead to unsafe levels of intoxication.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, this year introduced legislation to ban powdered alcohol nationwide. We are all well aware of the unfortunate price that is paid when our children and our communities are gripped by substance abuse and addiction – promising lives are shattered, stable homes are turned upside down, and neighborhoods are left searching for solutions.
Palcohol creator Mark Phillips argued this point to us, saying that a ban will “create a black market for it making it easier for kids to get a hold of it”.
“This isn’t about powdered alcohol being a public safety threat”, the website states.
