Homeless Pupil Gets Straight A*s – And Wins A Place At Cambridge – After
Jacob was left homeless after a fall-out with his family and then lost his zero-hours contract at a nightclub when he asked for time-off to take his exams.
Lewis added that he couldn’t be more grateful to his college, Coleg y Cymoedd, for the opportunities it afforded him.
The secret to his success appears to be sheer hard work, spending much of his time at in the college library.
Lewis described the past year as a “hard fight”, during which he was at times “barely eating”. “Having a permanent home with my family wasn’t an option”.
Lewis spent 12 hours a day in his school’s library, as he says it was “the only place I could study”.
Mr Lewis will be the first member of his family to go to university, but is yet to decide what he’ll do once he graduates.
He said he originally dropped out of school aged 17 but returned as a mature student after working in debt management for three years.
Jacob hit the four A*s in history, law, sociology and the Welsh baccalaureate.
He added that he no concrete plans for what to do after he finishes his studies at Cambridge, but he is certain he wants to “make the world a better place with the advantages that elite education” will give him. He secured 100 per cent in both History and Law, and is the first student from the college to win a place at Cambridge to study law.

Coleg y Cymoedd – Welsh for Valleys College – Principal Judith Evans said she was “very proud” of Jacob’s achievements, as well as everyone’s at the school.
