Andy Murray: Doubles match against Jamie was “awkward”
Earlier, world number one Novak Djokovic stormed into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup with 6-2 6-1 demolition of Jack Sock running his Masters 1000 winning streak to 28 matches.
The No. 7 seed from Spain, who won 7-6 (7-4) 6-3, had to battle all the way in the first set against the Ukrainian before clinching it in the tiebreak.
His next opponent will be Gilles Muller after the Luxembourg player beat Gael Monfils 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7/4).
Murray will look to extend his 4-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head edge over Gilles Muller when the pair meet for a spot in the quarter-finals.
It will be the first time he will have been placed so highly in six years and would equal his career-best ranking.
Of his meeting with Robredo, Murray told Sky Sports 3: “It was tricky conditions, very different to yesterday, and when the shadow came across the court it was tricky”.
The two competitors last met in the quarterfinal of 2015 Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club when Murray emerged triumphant with 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 scoreline. Picking up the ball was hard. “I don’t know how the Williams sisters have done that and played some great matches against each other in huge events”.
“Today was the best I hit the ball on the hardcourts since I started playing on it again”, said Murray, who was ousted in his first match in Washington last week on the same surface.
Andy Murray will be back on court at the Rogers Cup on Wednesday after his second-round match with Tommy Robredo was suspended due to rain.
“I’m glad I managed to finish it off in two because it’s been quite a long couple of days”.
“I’m already feeling a bit awkward about playing my brother in the second round here”.
