Plane crash debris found in Okanogan Co., at least 1 dead
Several fires and a downed aircraft are reported near Oroville off Chesaw Road, and the county alert system has told residents of the Nine Mile and Circle Road areas that “immediate evacuation” is recommended.
Local authorities and officials with the Federal Aviation Administration went to investigate the crash, which was at an elevation of about 3,000 feet.
“Due to the heat from the fires yesterday, the scene could not be processed until early this morning”, Rogers said. Two people died in the crash.
Rogers said his team planned to return to the site with the FAA on Friday to try to identify the plane and find out if more than one person was onboard. Names of the victims will be released later by Coroner Rodriguez, according to the Sheriff. Oroville is a small town near the Canadian border.
“There’s no tail numbers or anything because the plane was destroyed in the fire”, said Rogers.
Agents from the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to continue the investigation into the crash on Saturday.
A wildfire ignited by a plane crash that killed two people in a rugged area of northern Washington state chased hundreds of people from their homes Friday and burned 10 to 12 buildings, including residences, authorities said.
