Bay Area Olympic bid ends as USOC looks to LA

Los Angeles may compete for the right to become the candidate from the United States to host the 2024 Olympic Games after the withdrawal of Boston, USOC Chairman Larry Probst said.

“The Board authorized Scott Blackmun to work with Los Angeles to further explore the viability of the bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games”.

USOC officials said they quickly took a look at the three other finalists, including San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and fairly promptly decided that L.A. represents America’s best shot at competing with worldwide cities to host the 2024 summer games. The Winter Olympics have twice visited the continent since the ’84 Games, once in Salt Lake City and again when Vancouver hosted in 2010.

Probst and Blackmun declined to get into details about what issues might hold up a bid from Los Angeles, though they believe the mayor will honor his commitment to sign the host-city contract.

“You have to lay what happened more at the feet of Boston”, he said.

Probst added, “I think that the experience of hosting the Games in 1984 was a tremendously positive experience and a lot of people remember that fondly”.

The IOC will vote on the 2024 host in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.

The bet in Massachusetts experienced reduced degrees of public assistance – forms revealed significantly less than 40 percent of the populace as the community authorities hesitated about underwriting the expense, supported a bet.

“I think it would be a lost opportunity”, Blackmun said. The proposed budget also calls for a $400 million contingency to cover any cost overruns or shortfalls, which brings the total up to $4.5 billion, he said.

“That is a great legacy for the city and it was extremely successful financially”.

IOC President Thomas Bach and other Olympic power brokers were quick to tell the U.S.to find a replacement and push ahead with plans to bid. The Games would unite our communities, generate significant economic benefits, and with our world-class venues, be affordable and profitable like they were in 1932 and 1984. On the Summer side there is a whole generation of Americans that has not seen the Games on American soil.

Paris, Rome and Hamburg are also expected to bid for the Games. We want to address that and make sure the Games come to the United States on a regular basis given how important they are to us as a nation. The group began talks earlier this month with USOC officials, Garcetti senior adviser Jeff Millman said.
