Cuba dissidents won’t attend US Embassy event
America’s top diplomat will travel to Cuba for the ceremonial opening of Washington’s embassy in Havana on Friday. Kerry said he will meet with dissidents and “a broad cross-section of Cuban society that will be invited to that event at the mission”.
Over the years, Fidel Castro has been a frequent contributor of essays to the communist party newspaper Granma and other media.
“I wish Bolivia all the love and admiration of the world”, Castro said in a poor-quality audio carried by Bolivian state radio.
The United States said it was “deeply concerned” over the incident but that it would not affect Kerry’s visit.

“With a more open relationship between our two countries, we can work together to expand economic opportunity, support democratic reforms, and strengthen human rights”.
The administration’s trafficking report drew swift pushback from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle over concerns that countries, including Cuba and Malaysia, had received improved rankings despite little progress on human rights.
But Kerry countered that the past U.S. policy of confrontation didn’t produce results over the past five decades. It was not known where they went. We’ll see what this latest chapter brings as we witness it live.
“I can’t speak to what we may have, or may not have, shared with, or discussed with the Cuban government”, he said.
“This will not be the complete and total change that everybody wants overnight”, he added.
Kerry’s visit is the first by a US Secretary of State to Cuba in 70 years. As the two countries have moved to restore relations, Cuba has almost entirely stopped meeting with American politicians who visit dissidents during trips to Havana.
Rubio has said he will seek to block confirmation of a U.S. ambassador to Cuba until topics such as outstanding claims for confiscated U.S. properties, the return of U.S. fugitives living in Cuba and political freedom for the Cuban people are addressed. The biggest question remaining is how many average Cuban citizens will turn out to witness the historic moment.
Rubio, who appeared on the Hugh Hewitt Show stated, “We shouldn’t have diplomatic relations with an anti-American, communist dictatorship that continues to oppress it’s own people 90 miles from our shores”. “Now, the United States has good relations with Cuba and with Iran, a surprise (deal)”, said Morales.
Aside from ideology, many hope that the US sanctions will soon be over.
