Chargers announce 4-year extension for Philip Rivers
Quarterback Philip Rivers agreed to a four-year contract extension with the team Saturday night, the team formally announced via Twitter.
Nevertheless, Rivers will be playing with the Chargers-no matter where they end up playing.
ESPN reported Rivers’ extension was worth $83.25m, $65m of which is guaranteed.
So Rivers will make more than $10 million more than Wilson over the next five years.
The question is, will the quarterback finish his career in San Diego or Los Angeles? The Chargers walked away from negotiations for a new stadium in San Diego in mid-June. The two sides’s relationship seemed to be on its last legs during the spring, when it was rumored that Rivers may be traded during the NFL Draft for the second overall pick. Many argue Rivers is still an “elite” NFL quarterback despite his age, pointing at his resurgence over the past couple seasons. Both are represented by CAA, the firm that negotiated the Rivers deal.
Philip Rivers isn’t going anywhere. In NFL history, he ranks 20 in completions and passing yards and 16 in touchdown passes.
The QB led the Chargers to four straight AFC West titles from 2006-09 and to a wild-card berth in 2013.
This is some of the best news to come from the team this offseason. They also brought in Jacoby Jones to line up next to Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd. The team drafted running back Melvin Gordon after loosing Ryan Matthews to the Eagles in free agency.
With this deal, Andrew Luck is just licking his chops waiting for his contract to be finalized.
