Military Parachute Jumpers Collide Mid-Air at Chicago Air and Water Show
“Two parachutists, one may have been knocked unconscious or something in mid-air so he had a hard landing and hit a building”, Cook said.
A pair of military parachute jumpers were injured on Saturday during performances at the Chicago Air and Water Show.
Both were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition. During the stunt, parachutists fall with red smoke trailing from packs and then separate, creating a colorful visual in the sky.
Hernandez says one man was found on North Avenue Beach and the other landed farther south in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
A witness said the Army jumper hit a rooftop on his way down and “folded over”.
“His legs caught the tip of the roof, and then he fell over”. It was frightful, ‘ she told the newspaper. She said the man, who is in his late 20s, had multiple injuries. A maintenance worker on the same roof called paramedics, she said.
“If he was only one foot closer to the roof, the maintenance guy could’ve grabbed him”, Mendenhall said.
Video captured from the scene at North Avenue Beach shows the parachutist holding up a “hang ten” to everyone on the beach as he was escorted away.
Millions of spectators are expected to pack Chicago’s lakefront for the city’s annual Air and Water Show.
Lt. Ryan Chamberlain is one of the Navy’s Blue Angel pilots.
