Twins put Hughes on DL, with lower back inflammation
May will remain in the rotation for at least one more start after that. Right-hander Phil Hughes will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, due to inflammation in his lower back.
He had a particularly bad outing on August 9, his last start before being sent to the DL, as he was rocked for seven runs on nine hits in three innings against the Cleveland Indians. He’s given up 81 hits in 81 innings.
Meanwhile, right-hander Trevor May will be put back into the starting rotation from the bullpen and is set to start sometime next week. He’ll stretch out the arm on the road against the Orioles in his next scheduled start.
The highly anticipated major league debut of top pitching prospect Jose Berrios will have to wait even though a spot in the rotation opened up with Phil Hughes headed for the disabled list, according to multiple reports. May is 8-7 with a 4.09 ERA and will start on Friday against the Indians.
Tyler Duffey will also find himself getting a start this weekend. Duffey survived just 2 innings and allowed six earned runs against the red-hot Blue Jays in Toronto.
This is still an area of concern, though, with the Twins trying to stay viable in the AL wild card race.
