Werdum to defend UFC title vs Velasquez in rematch
The heavyweight title rematch was revealed on Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight”, although a date and venue for the fight were not announced.
Since Velasquez was on the sidelines between 2013 and 2015, there emerged several worthy competitors that have earned a shot to challenge for the UFC heavyweight championship against Fabricio Werdum.
As for Cain, when he stepped into the octagon with Fabricio at UFC 188, it was the first time in more than a year and a half. After that, fans started saying Cain didn’t deserve a rematch because I dominated him, and I got into it as well. However Cain Velasquez has also fought just once in the last two years-which was the third round submission loss to Werdum, mainly due to injuries. I believe there were a lot of reasons, actually: the altitude, the fact that I wanted it so bad, that he hasn’t fought for a while, but his coach said he was in great shape and would give him a worse beating than he gave “Cigano”, so I knew he wasn’t confident.
While the capacity seems to be a daunting capacity to fill up, Werdum believes that he can get more than 50,000 fans there for his first title defense.
Next, #3 Stipe Miocic has looked impressive in his recent run in the division, and yes that includes an incredibly hard fought loss to Junior Dos Santos in December. He said ‘Werdum, we will fight Velasquez again and it’ll be in Las Vegas.’ But after this tour I made all over Brazil, I would really like if the fight took place in Porto Alegre. UFC 180 is when Werdum scored a win over Mark Hunt, and that match was for the interim version of the UFC heavyweight belt.
I think Cain Velasquez is arguably one of the best heavyweights of his era, but I don’t think he had done enough as champion to warrant an immediate rematch considering how Werdum defeated him. The second fight, just like the first time around, is going to be scheduled for five rounds.
