TV Land cancels ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ reruns
Consumer Products, which ended production of die-cast replicas and vehicle model kits of the 1969 Dodge Charger – “The General Lee” – with a Confederate flag on its roof that was famous on “Dukes“. The move comes in the wake of the nationwide debate over the Confederate flag following the murder of nine African Americans in a racially motivated attack on June 17 at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Pictures of suspect Dylann Roof with the flag have surfaced since the massacre. “Is the flag used as such in other applications?”
For DeRay Mckesson, a rights activist and a leader of the Black Lives Matter movement, stopping the reruns was an important step. The flag needs to be removed from places where it is a symbol of hate and intimidation.

TV Land also stopped airing episodes of The Cosby Show in November as women came forward with sexual-assault allegations against Bill Cosby. He said it is part of a “cultural cleansing” and the erasure of his ancestors who fought for the South, not the emblem held up by white supremacist organizations like the Ku Klux Klan.

Were the hit television series “The Dukes of Hazzard” filmed today rather than three decades ago, the “authorities” constantly chasing the Duke brothers around rural Georgia would not be a crooked county commissioner and a half-wit sheriff. But as people from all walks of life, Republicans and Democrats, now acknowledge, including Governor Haley, whose recent eloquence on the subject is worthy of praise as we all have to acknowledge, the flag has always represented more than just ancestral pride.
