Jay Leno’s Garage Opens on CNBC October. 7
The 65-year-old former host of NBC’s The Tonight Show took aim at 47-year-old Kimmel while at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, California. Then again, he didn’t have the late night send-off or the longstanding good wishes that David Letterman received when his oddball CBS series finally made its last bow.
“Leno, who appeared on the first episode of James Corden’s Late Late Show, did not say whether or not he would be a guest on Colbert when he launches -“I’m kind of loyal to the night show and to Jimmy [Fallon]” – in part, seemingly, because he is very proud of The Tonight Show’s No. 1 status”.
But beyond his piercing wit, there is something about Kimmel – some everyman quality – that makes him more relatable, than, say, Conan O’Brien – who shares Kimmel’s acerbic smarts, but whose charisma and franticness give one the sense that he’d be intimidating to have a beer with. We go back a long time, we have a lot of history.
He likes the art-deco cars from the 1930s and 1940s. Hes so overwhelmingly energetic and positive, you cant help but buy into his humbled perspective.
The future CNBC show host also revealed that he’s been saving his Donald Trump jokes. “He teaches Sunday school”.
“The idea of a white guy in late night, this is revolutionary”, he deadpanned. The other late-night hosts have migrated to YouTube in recent years as well, but Kimmel remains the undisputed king of the viral video: Remember this?
When prodded, Leno showed he can’t get too far from a monologue, throwing out a few political jokes.
Leno also forecasts the GOP race would be winnowed down to Jeb Bush vs Trump, aka “The Tortoise and the Bad Hair”. John McCain’s heroism because he did not realize that without McCain the north would have lost the Civil War, from which Leno segued into the Trump medical condition gag.
