Eagles announce Zach Ertz had groin surgery
Dr. William Meyers is a sports hernia specialist – he is the doctor who recently performed surgery on Houston Texans running back Arian Foster’s groin.
A league source told ESPN’s Adam Caplan that Ertz had suffered a groin injury.
Kelly said he expects Ertz to be ready by the start of the regular season. Ertz has been among the most impressive Eagles players on display in the team’s preseason practice sessions up to this point and not having him for any extended period of time would be a major blow to the offense. Ertz has not missed a game in his two-year NFL career.
Coach Chip Kelly says he’s holding Bradford out an extra week because he’s returning from his second ACL injury.
Ertz, a second-round pick in 2013, caught 58 passes for 702 yards and three touchdowns in 2014. Poised to take over the team’s top tight end position from Brent Celek, much was made of Ertz’s intense offseason training. When he left Wednesday’s practice, it seemed he had banged his right shoulder hard on the turf, for at least the third time in camp. Jason Kelce dealt with similar issues that caused him to sit out a handful of games last season.
The Eagles also waived outside linebacker Brandon Hepburn (abdominal) and defensive end B.J. McBryde (foot) after reaching injury settlements and signed free agent defensive end Alfy Hill, a former Winston-Salem State standout who was originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals after a tryout. One of the byproducts of not being able to have Zach for a couple games here in the preseason will give those guys an opportunity to see what they can do. Sanchez might have a slim shot at being the starter if he can really impress this preseason.
