Former Senator Defends Iran Deal
Under the worldwide agreement reached last month, Russia, China and European Union countries will lift their sanctions on Iran as Iran accepts curbs and inspections on its nuclear program.
Angry GOP leaders pressed Democrats to defect and join New York Sen. That morning, Al Franken became another Senate Democrat, and Jewish lawmaker, to voice his support for the deal.
These poll numbers show bumps in the numbers of people who approve and disapprove of the Iran nuclear agreement, with a lower number saying they were uncertain of their opinion.
Rep. Israel voiced his concerns about key elements of the deal. Are you kidding? That is a recipe quickly, my friends, for them to walk away from Ukraine, where they are already very dicey and ready to say, ‘Well, we’ve done our bit’. “But I have not heard from anyone on my side of the aisle that says they’re voting for it”. “I have to base my vote on what’s in my heart”.
The effort was spearheaded by Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the panel, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Levin and former Sen. On Tuesday, the junior senator from California, Barbara Boxer, came out for the agreement.
Congressional Republicans will vote to disapprove of the deal in mid-September, although Obama will veto the measure. Obama would need either 34 senators or 146 House members to oppose an override to uphold the veto.
Brown is the 20 Senate Democrat to publicly endorse the deal, which will keep Iran from producing enough material for an atomic weapon for at least 10 years.
The ADL’s denouncement of the deal is likely to ruffle feather among the Obama administration, which has had close ties to the organization and used it to defend controversial policies in the past. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, vehemently opposes the deal.
Hezbollah’s TV station al-Manar reported, “Zarif said from Beirut that the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the world powers created a historic opportunity for regional cooperation to fight extremism and face threats posed by the Zionist entity”.
And, ultimately, the experts agree that if Iran decides to race toward a nuclear weapon, with or without this deal, the only foolproof way to halt this path is a large scale military strike.
Lowey continued, “In my judgment, sufficient safeguards are not in place to address the risks associated with the agreement”.
But Mr Obama can revoke some sanctions that were imposed without the involvement of Congress. Those may include lifting of restrictions on loans and credits to designated Iranian companies and individuals. “If that leads, as I believe it will, to a fraying of the economic sanctions regime… then we could end up with the worst of all worlds, with an unconstrained nuclear program, fraying sanctions and worldwide disunity that Iran will be able to capitalize on”.
