Ice Cube Has More Unreleased Music Recorded with Dr. Dre
Music biopic Straight Outta Compton hauled in about $5 million from its first night in theaters Thursday. But Cube and Dre and F. Gary Grey, the director, they did a good job to me. And as Dre explains, ‘If N.W.A had done it softer, it wouldn’t have gotten the attention. It’s named after their debut 1988 album featuring the anti-racial profiling song F-k the Police as well as Gangsta Gangsta. They weren’t even born when the rap group was belting out their gangster lifestyle in their lyrics. “So I just think we opened up the door for artists to be on any side of the fence they want to be on”.
Dr. Dre expressed his shock at how far the group has come from making tracks for their neighborhood. Still others will find it a self-indulgent, one-sided look at music and racial history after all, it is co-produced by N.W.A.co-founders Dr. Dre and Ice Cube.
Warner Bros. isn’t expecting the spy movie to have a big launch, despite opening in over 3,400 theaters. “If Universal was determined to release the movie, the cops we spoke with say they should have waited”.
For Jonathan Mannion, the photographer who shot the original images for the “Straight Outta” Beats campaign, it’s like seeing the entire world repost photos in his photographic style.
Missing from the reunion was rapper Eazy-E, who died from complications from Aids in 1995. When Jackson became an actor, he probably never imagined he would be playing his dad, but he nails the role. The movie sounds like it might be too long at two hours and a half, but it held my interest at that length and my friend Tracey Bagley agrees.
“Straight Outta Compton” is a powerful story about not just life in the hood, but also about friendship, brotherhood and persevering against all odds.
If you’ve been on social media in the past week, there’s no way you haven’t seen the “Straight Outta” meme running up and down your timeline.
