Pistol-Whipped Police Detective Didn’t Shoot Attacker Due to Headlines, Union Says
Police and civil people around the nation were horrified to see images of the bleeding officer being celebrated on social media.
The suspect, Janard Cunningham, 34, is now in jail accused of attacking the officer after becoming aggressive during a routine traffic stop in Roebuck, Birmingham, last week. I hesitated because I didn’t want to be in the media like I am right now.’ He goes on to say about local police officers, ‘We don’t want to be in the media.
Birmingham Police Sgt. Heath Boackle, who is also president of the city’s Fraternal Order of Police, agreed, saying the officer “could be dead right now” because of the hesitation caused by media coverage.
He said: ‘The nobility and integrity of policing has been challenged. It’s hard times right now for us, ‘”CNN’s Nick Valencia said”.
The detective, a six-year veteran, noticed a man driving on the interstate erratically.
The unidentified detective is now recovering at home, according to police.
Photos of the officer lying face down on the sidewalk spread through Twitter, with one person tweeting, “Pistol pimped his face n um chillen now” and another person using Facebook to post, “Pistol whipped his a** to sleep”.
Last week, an Alabama police officer was brutally pistol-whipped and left unconscious by his attacker. People were there long enough to take pictures of the officer full of blood and put it on social media. “Mr. Cunningham sucker-punched the officer, immediately knocking him to the ground and gained control of his weapon and beat him until he was unconscious”. And according to CNN, a possible motive for the suspect’s attack is retaliation against police brutality.
Cunningham was taken into custody after the assault and is being held at Jefferson County Jail while police have released a second suspect who was apprehended without filing charges.
“I feel that in today’s society, both from law enforcement and the citizens, we have to trust in one another and do the best we can for this world as a whole”, Boackle said.
