Aussie rugby league star Jarryd Hayne impresses on NFL debut
If you watch enough Jarryd Hayne rugby highlights (see below), you’ll know that it’s no surprise he can play running back in the NFL.
All he did was post 63 yards on five attempts, which averaged 12.6 yards per carry.
He set the game alight with a 53-yard run in the second quarter and later on, made an exciting 33-yard kickoff return.
Jaelen Strong, a rookie third-round pick, caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tom Savage to give Houston a 15-10 lead early in the third quarter. Gabbert found Garrett Celek from 10 yards out to put the 49ers on the board.
Vote in our poll: Will Jarryd Hayne make it into the Niners squad?
Former Kangaroos player Jarryd Hayne has signed with NFL side the San Francisco 49ers.
“I felt a huge weight lifted”, Hayne said. I brought a lot of pressure on myself, I wanted to fit in…
Hayne certainly looked as if he belongs in the NFL.
This is the summer of Jarryd Hayne, it turns out, and maybe it’s a lot more than just an exhibition fling. He has worked extensively with running backs coach Tom Rathman to learn the system and his technique.
Key tackles in that goal-line sequence came from Mike Purcell, Antoine Bethea, Quinton Dial, Shayne Skov, and on the fourth-down stop, Eric Reid, Shareece Wright and Nick Moody.
“He absolutely has to battle to make the roster”, Tomsula said. There were rumblings of mutual interest with the Detroit Lions as recently as a week before Hayne picked San Francisco, a team he’d at one point crossed off his list, given all the uncertainty following Jim Harbaugh’s departure as head coach. I hope I m presenting a very tempered approach to what happened tonight with Jarryd. Some of his favorite teams are the San Jose Sharks, San Francisco 49ers, Golden State Warriors, Oakland Athletics, and Chicago Cubs. Here are a few key notes about the 49ers first game of the preseason. He was also flagged for holding on a running back leaving the backfield on a pass play. That would leave Hayne, Davis and Gaskins to see plenty of snaps. That’s true, I was just a little anxious about Bush getting the job before really earning it. Fortunately, after Saturday’s game, I think there’s obviously going to be some competition at the positions going forward in training camp and the preseason. That’s just where he needs to keep working.
