PGA Championships: Anirban Lahiri finishes joint 5th, records best finish by
As things stand, Lahiri would be an automatic selection for the Internationals team to take on holders the United States in Incheon, South Korea from October 8-11.
No Indian had concluded a major that high on the leader board. I’ve never really gotten into contention. But obviously a little disappointed with that finish. First he was told he had fallen short of earning his card and then was given a maybe. Lahiri, who scored a 70 in the opening round on Thursday, was two-under 50 after 13 holes when a storm halted the second round of play on Friday at the par-72 Whistling Straits course. He took part in the competition last year as well, but missed the fairway despite coming up with a powerful effort. Lahiri would become the first Indian to play in the President’s Cup, should he be selected. Jeev has made the cut twice in four starts with Tied-9th at Oakland Hills in 2008 being his best.
Lahiri will be rewarded with a gold money clip. PGA Long Drive Competition originated in 1952 at PGA Championship in Louisville.
Among fans this weekend, though, he was still a relative unknown even after winning the long drive competition and entering the final round in the top 10. The 28-year-old began Sunday’s play at 9-under (T8) and six adrift of Day. “I walked out of the fairway to get out of Martin’s way, and asked the cameraman, where did the ball go?” he said. “I felt very much at home”.
“I feel like I can compete and it’s good to have evidence of that this week at Whistling Straits“.
Lahiri represents arguably the biggest positives in Indian golf right now.
PGA is an annual golf tournament conducted by Professional Golfers of Association of America.
He also hopes his record-setting performance this week and ascent in the golf world serves as a catalyst for the sport in his native country. “I’ve won several times now in Asia and Europe and it’s a different kind of thrill when you don’t play for yourself”, Lahiri said.
“I just need to keep playing well”. I won’t really say I was in contention here, because I was a long ways out.
