Israeli troops shoot Palestinian after he stabbed a soldier
Some Palestinians feel the law is intended to weaken negotiating powers of prisoners who frequently use hunger strikes to protest administrative detention – a provision which authorizes Israeli authorities to detain inmates for six months and is often extended to prolong imprisonment for years.
The High Court of Justice convened on Monday afternoon to discuss an appeal filed by Allaan’s lawyer calling for his immediate release from Israeli detention. PHR-Israel hopes and believes that the doctors in Barzilai Hospital have acted with respect and in accordance with Allan’s will. The situation we are now facing could have been avoided. The Israel Medical Assn. argues that force-feeding is risky and amounts to torture. In June, Israel released Khader Adnan, 36, a senior activist in Islamic Jihad, after he carried out a 55-day hunger strike to protest his detention.
Israel says he is being held for his activities in the Islamic Jihad, a group which has carried out numerous violent attacks against civilians. Israel fears a hunger striking prisoner’s death could spark violence.
His case has become a source of growing concern among the Palestinian public, while Israel faces a dilemma over whether to force-feed the protester.
Allan’s worsening condition came following a rejection on Thursday of a request for his medical release. An ethics committee at the hospital authorized taking blood samples as a first step to force-feeding him, but doctors declined to comply.
It said that the foreign ministry has prepared a complete file on the Israeli killing and wounding of Palestinian young men in the field instead of arresting them, and called on the worldwide community to protect the Palestinians.
Ashkelon: Arab supporters and Jewish detractors of a Palestinian held by Israel without trial clashed Sunday with police near the hospital treating him after he lost consciousness during a hunger strike. “A doctor will not participate in force-feeing a hunger striker”, it says in a position paper published on its website.
He has been hospitalized since Friday at the Barzilai Medical Center, where he remains unconscious but stable after being given fluids and salts intravenously.
“This force-feeding is trying to be imposed on doctors for security and political reasons, that have nothing to do with medical reasons”, Walden said.
So far, no doctor has agreed to conduct force feeding on Allan, according to the Times.
