Fantastic Four: Original is better, None of it made sense

A Fantastic Four crewmember concurs but says that doesn’t relieve the studio of its responsibility for what went wrong with this film. The other two tried to follow the way Lee and Kirby presented the characters. The visit to Zero doesn’t go well, for either the story or the movie: a character makes a mistake, the energy that’s been detected displays some sort of sentience, and everything begins to go awry. Sue is a genius at pattern recognition. Dr. Strom is African American. He is also a hot head with huge father issues. When the group returns, they’re forever changed. And yet, when we arrive at the scene where Reed wakes up from his coma and finds his arms and legs can stretched, it comes across as too fake-looking and slightly gross.

Mara as Sue is left without any back story that warms up her relationship with the Storms. He becomes a huge, rocky creature known as the Thing. Now that the landscape has been established with an origin story hopefully the not-to-blame cast will get a better outing to sink their super-powered teeth into next time around.

So what is my problem? Outside of a few inspired visuals and the possibility that its failure will kill the planned sequel, there is nothing fantastic about “Fantastic Four“.

It all begins promisingly, with a setup that introduces Reed Richards and Ben Grimm as fifth-graders on Long Island. The movie does well with this idea. But these actors – unlike, say, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the recent “Spider-Man” films – are not well used, and their charisma remains largely untapped. The angst angle gets swallowed up by the Doom story. And even though it boasts characters with the most unique abilities – flying flame boy, invisible girl, man with stretchy body parts – computer-generated images failed to make the blockbuster look convincing and extravagant. But Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes not only revived the series, but made it one of the biggest sci-fi film series going right now. Which brings up another point of contention. Comic books are derivative of a patently absurd universe, where people fly around with their underwear on the outside. He is not so much homicidal as ego driven. “Impossible” have all been satisfactions; “Pitch flawless 2”, “Terminator” and “Pixels” were so absolutely awful that I don’t have the energy to see – and inevitably hate – “Fantastic Four” right now. It was in the second half of the movie that I saw something that doomed (no pun intended) the whole thing.

A crewmember said “it was chaos”, and added that the director was still in attendance, “but was neutralized by a committee”.

Because Mr. Fantastic loves his family, and he believes for a fact that their superpowers are entirely his fault.

None of that matters now. The film flopped instantly and is already being regarded as one of the worst comic book films of all time. Sam Mendes revived the Bond franchise with the incredible Skyfall after the dismal Quantum of Solace seemed to make everyone lose interest in Agent 007. We suspect it must have been planned for use at one point, and not just file footage, since that road appears to be the same one later imperiled by Doom’s attack.
