Daniel Briere announces retirement from hockey after 17 NHL seasons
Briere began his professional career in the 1997-98 season, which he spent mostly with Phoenix’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons. He’d go on to spend six seasons with the Philadelphia organization, before moving on to play with the Montreal Canadiens for the 2013-14 season.
Briere played 973 regular-season games and totaled 696 points (307 goals, 389 assists). He also appeared in 176 games with the Falcons, notching 89 goals and 132 assists. Briere won the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL rookie of the year after posting 36 goals and 56 assists for 92 points in 68 games.
Briere, 37, played with five teams during his career.
Briere was named a co-captain of the Buffalo Sabres, joining Chris Drury in sharing the leadership honors from 2005 until 2007.
Throughout his career in the playoffs, Briere recorded 116 points in 124 games and ranks 4th among all active players. I’ve had a great time in Philadelphia and have been very, very fortunate to have the chance to play here. “I’ve had a great time in Philadelphia and have been very, very fortunate to have the chance to play here”, Briere said.
The 2006-07 season was the best of Briere’s career.
Briere sure seems like a candidate to find a job in the Flyers organization at some point, doesn’t he?
Now, he hangs up the skates, but it’s a great time to look back – what’s your favorite memory of Briere during his time with the Buffalo Sabres? Last season, he had eight goals and 12 points in 57 games.
It’s not known what plans Briere has now that his playing days are over. He led the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs in scoring, registering 30 points in 23 games, but the Flyers fell to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Final.
