Shots reported on Washington Navy Yard campus
It is the same complex where a gunman opened fire and killed 12 people two years ago.
No arrests had been made, no weapons were discovered, and no injuries were reported, said the officials, who all had been briefed on the situation or had knowledge of it, but spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release details.
A Navy Yard worker said he didn’t notice anything unusual Thursday morning – everything was normal.
In a press conference late Thursday morning, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said that a Navy Yard employee reported at approximately 7:29 a.m. that “she may have heard gunshots in the facility”.
The pedestrian plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue, in front of the White House, has been sealed off by law enforcement after the Navy Yard alert.
The scene has been turned back over to Naval Sea Systems Command.
“This is what we tell people to do”, Lanier said, but after a thorough search of the 41-acre facility on the Anacostia River in southeastern Washington, D.C., “all evidence is that there was no criminal act here”. An official said no one has been found in the building.
Reuters adds: Police found no evidence of a shooter at the facility just a mile south of the USA Capitol, a Washington police department spokeswoman said about two hours after initial reports emerged. Building 197, where that shooting took place, was the focal point Thursday of an office-by-office search.
MSNBC and CNN didn’t report confirmation there was an active shooter; CNN reported of a “potential active shooter”.
“All personnel OK”, the Navy said in a tweet.
UPDATE – 8:27 a.m. Additional training was conducted after the 2013 shooting to ensure better coordination among the agencies involved.
“My heart dropped. I nearly came to tears”, says Brent Whelan, who worked in building 197 in 2013.
The Navy Yard, and locations around the area on M Street, are on lock down.
Police say a call was placed from a building inside the naval installation about possible sounds of gunshots about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. He’s not quite sure what caused the lockdown, but said, in terms of protocol, it felt a lot like the previous Navy Yard shooting.
