Australian Jones moves two ahead at Whistling Straits
Jordan Spieth leads a group at 6 under.
As it so often does, the PGA is producing some of the best drama, and golf, of any major.
Rose picked up further shots on the seventh and ninth and amazingly missed from just three feet for an eagle on the par-five 11th and a share of the lead.
Said Day: “I’m willing to put my body on the line to get a taste of that greatness”.
“I got to the board on 18. So if I keep showing improvement each and every day like I have done, it’s a good sign going into the rest of the season”. Justin Rose is another shot back. He was frustrated not to pull the shot back at the par-five 16th, but drained a 24-footer for birdie at 17.
Only two other golfers have won three majors in a single year: Ben Hogan in 1953 and Tiger Woods in 2000.
After his second round finished up at the PGA this morning, he said he would discuss the plan with his team and decide in the next few days about whether to play next week in Greensboro, North Carolina. I’ve been in the lead on a Tour event, but a major’s a different story.
He was at 15-under 201.
The abundant sunshine and endless action Saturday might have been a preview for what could be a sensational end to the majors. Before that, Day, cruising at 16-under par, was five shots ahead of Spieth, even as the Texan inched up the leaderboard.
The ever-popular Phil Mickelson was another to charge up the field early on, notching up nine birdies alongside three bogeys for a round of 65 to finish the day 5-under-par. His round was marred by a double bogey at the par-four 18th, where a attractive drive was followed by a second shot into the rough. No such issues this time and there won’t be a more popular victor if he can, in fact, pull through when the final round gets underway tonight.
The third day brought with it benign conditions, in contrast to the storm that ended play early on Friday, and scoring appeared easy at times during a thrilling afternoon in Wisconsin. “He’s just full of confidence right now. If I was to shoot 68 again, ask the question, you never know”.
The World No. 2 sounded ominously confident when reflecting with the same broadcaster on his masterful back nine performance and chances come Sunday. As the metronomic Spieth kept birdieing holes – six of eight to finish the round – Day’s final lead dwindled.
“I putted much better today thankfully”, said McIlroy. He should still be feeling pretty good, though, with the win at Bridgestone securing his card for the next three years. Now wouldn’t that be something-there aren’t too many frontiers left in professional sport, and to go down in history as the first Indian to win a major championship.
Henderson is attempting to become the second Monday qualifier to win an LPGA Tour tournament.
And then Day caught a tough lie through the green on the par-5 16th and failed to make birdie.
“That one was nice”, Spieth said.
“Prior to the tournament”, said Spieth, “I talked to the local caddies who told me that there’s always much more sand in that bunker – and I think there’s one other – than the remainder of the bunkers on the course“. “But I did all I could do to finish off the round”. But he said that only reminded him that, historic or not, majors are precious.
Finau was in the mix going into the weekend at the U.S. Open and tied for 14th. Nobody would’ve criticized him if he gave it the ol’ college try at Whistling Straits, waved his cap to the appreciative fans and then taken his T-17 to the airport for a contented ride home.
