Hebrew U Ranked 67th Globally
Following in second was the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, which ranked 70th, and the Weizmann Institute of Science that was ranked in the 101-150 category.
Published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization providing higher education information, the annual ranking lists the 500 best from among more than 1,200 universities surveyed around the world.
The 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities – compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and issued August 15 – uses several criteria to measure excellence. Technion broke through to the top 80 in 2012, and has remained in this elite group since. Bar-Ilan University and Ben Gurion University of the Negev are ranked between 400 and 500. Tel Aviv University 20.
University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, the only two non-American universities in the top 10, were fifth and 10th.
Warwick’s vice-chancellor, Professor Sir Nigel Thrift, expressed his delight at the institution’s performance this year and said: “This has been a year filled with stunning global ranking results for the University of Warwick, and it is particularly fitting that this come in the year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our university”.
Since its origins in 2003, the Shanghai Ranking has included the Hebrew University among the world’s 100 leading universities every year, consolidating the Israeli institution’s status as a world leader in academia and research.
Among five specific subjects ranked, Berkeley took first in physics and chemistry, and placed in the top five in mathematics, computer science and economics/business.
Since then it has evolved into the most influential ranking of universities worldwide.
Last month another university league table, published by the Centre for World University Ratings, put the University of Helsinki much lower down the list, in 111th place.
