Greinke dominates, hits go-ahead HR as Dodgers beat Reds 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Zack Greinke is one of only three pitchers in major league history to win a Cy Young Award, a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove.
Enrique Hernandez, Yasiel Puig, Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez all homered, sparking the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night before 46,807 at Dodger Stadium.
After Votto’s homer in the sixth inning made it a two-run game, the Reds didn’t have another hit.
“I was taking it all in and trying to embrace it”, said Lamb, who lost 5-3.
Reds rookie David Holmberg failed to make it out of the third, lasting just two-plus innings and serving up seven runs, five hits and four walks. Both earned runs came on back to back solo shots, but aside from that half-inning misstep, he fanned 6, walked just 2, and looked largely in command against one of the best squads in all of baseball.
Still, he thought he entered this homestand on a minor slump.
The Dodgers are 113-54 in 167 combined starts by Greinke and Clayton Kershaw during their three seasons as teammates. “You have Kershaw, you have Greinke, and then it’s hold on to your hats”, Scully said during Thursday night’s broadcast.
The Dodgers end the homestand with a three game winning streak. Running high into the All-Star break was a plus, but this mid season skid better get tossed behind them soon if they want to remain in playoff contention, before the Nets run away with the division. He said the 93-degree day he pitched on in Washington last month felt “way hotter”, because of the humidity. “This year, it was the same thing”.
The Reds placed the potential tying run in scoring position in the seventh.
In the top of the fifth, center fielder Billy Hamilton’s sacrifice fly brought left fielder Marlon Byrd home to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Mattheus ran into some trouble in the bottom of the inning as Puig reached on an infield single, but moved to second on an uncharacteristic error by Phillips. One inning later, he yielded back-to-back walks right after Turner’s homer.
With former Dodgers utilityman Skip Schumaker pinch-hitting for DeSclafani, Mattingly visited Greinke on the mound.
“I gave it everything I had, and tried mixing it up”, DeSclafani said. “I had pretty decent command and got some quick outs”. “He had some advice for that”. Aaron Brooks entered, and Machado sent the right-hander’s second pitch into the seats in left field.
ORIOLES 8, ATHLETICS 6: Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning, and Baltimore also got home runs from Adam Jones and Chris Davis in a victory over Oakland.
Jim Johnson, who was the villain when he had a horrendous outing in Pittsburgh, came in to pitch a scoreless inning during the Nationals blowout over the Dodgers in Game 3. Yay?
“The No. 1 goal is to get them out and, then, if you’re feeling good and have enough energy to spare, then you might focus on your hitting”, he said.
